What is blackout? Blackout is a light reduction in the room of around 90% – 99.9%.

These conditions are normally requested in residential environments for sleep and privacy. Offices and meeting rooms may also require blackout for audio-visual scene setting for presentations, and can be connected to AV systems controlling the blinds lighting and sound.

Laboratories, medical, healthcare and research establishments also need blackout for light sensitive applications. Schools will often equip one or two of their science laboratories to have blackout capability to help with experiments, and also drama and hall areas for performances.

Creating the best blackout conditions in a room is often done by using blackout blinds with a fully enclosed head box and side rails to hold and trap the fabric, using opaque fabrics so light can’t pass through creating an efficient light seal.

Curtains with blackout fabrics are often used in office buildings particularly over large areas and to create flexible room dividers. Light would normally be visible above and below the curtains but the overall reduction in light can be significant and effective.

The ability to achieve a high level of blackout will depend on the design of the building and windows, and how the construction allows products to be installed and a light seal created. Sometimes it isn’t practical or economical to achieve, or work is needed to change the fixing situation to make it possible.
